Gary Keith Johnson is someone who really amazes me in this industry, and he is back out live with the Lohden Boys this Summer.
He currently has, (and him and I joke back and forth that we have to double-check the exact number), 9 drums from here that he has used live, or in his home practice studio. One of the drums is a #1 of the 1.5 Steel–7.5 x 12 that has been his main on many occasions, and it truly is utterly amazing the sounds that he has gotten out of that drum. The fact that it is a 7.5 x 12 and he is using it as his main, is one aspect. But the depth and tone that he has gotten out of that drum has truly been remarkable, not only to band members, but to FOH engineers, and to other drummers. That shell was a drum that came about by accident here, it was intended to be a 7.5 x 14, and I made the shell too small. There were two of them, and the second one is owned by industry great Jarred Pope (Tom Keifer, Damon Johnson, Gene Simmons).
Gary's depth of knowledge with the history of drums, different brands, technical aspects, parts and accessories, recording gear, and live experience with gear is truly remarkable, and is almost unparalleled in my experience. I've encouraged him to start a website with a discussion based forum, and I truly hope that comes about someday soon. His knowledge is rooted in direct experience, and a resource like that would be incredibly valuable, and hugely popular in the industry.
He is also a US representative for Canopus Drums, and they are one of the great drum companies of the world. They have a very unique and sincere approach to manufacturing drums. They are made for a Musical purpose and a specific intention, and that is what it truly should be about.
Great touching base with you the other day my friend. Wishing you the best with your health struggles right now, and will follow up with you and how are you are doing.
